RockClones, abbreviated as RC, also known in its full title as RockClones: Dr. Golden's Attack!! is a cancelled fangame made by TheCyVap. It was intended to be the final installment in the overall Five Nights at Sonic's series.

Features

Main

Unlike previous FNaS games, RockClones is a sidescrolling shoot-em-up game in a similar style to the Mega Man series of games. There are four playable characters, which are the main four clones; Clone Sonic, Mario, Yoshi and Tails. Each playable character has different stats that would slightly change gameplay, resulting in variety. With these playable characters, the player is expected to beat all of Dr. Golden's Numbers: Toy Sonic, Toy Mario, Luiginette, Balloon Toad, Toy Tails, and Toy Yoshi.

After beating all of Dr. Golden's robots, the player would play through several stages inside Golden Castle, the final stage being a fight against Dr. Golden. Each stage beforehand is a fight against the shadow and metal versions of Sonic, Mario, Yoshi and Tails. Another boss inside Golden Castle was the "Shadow Devil", the combined remains of the four shadows after they were defeated. The Shadow Devil starts powerful because of the Phantom Ruby it first absorbs, later on absorbing all of the 6 Toys and the 4 Metals mentioned previously.

There were two endings planned: one of them being the good ending in which Eggman's spirit is released from Dr. Golden's body, while the other is the bad ending where Dr. Golden is killed for good by the clones. The good ending unlocks Dr. Golden as a playable character and is canon to the story.

Encore Mode

Encore Mode is a gamemode based off of Sonic Mania's Encore Mode, and might've acted how one would expect; a rethread of the previous stages, different in color palette and slight changes to the level design. Lunighttemare was supposed to replace Luiginette, resulting in an original boss fight to occur.

The events of this mode takes place after the main mode. The Dev Team appears as antagonists who have stolen the Phantom Ruby and have taken over Golden Castle. In Encore Mode, the Golden Castle stages would be original, based on one individual member of Team Cyantix. The main villain would be Phantom Ian.

Encore Mode was ultimately retconned as non-canon, leaving the good ending of the main campaign as the true end of the story.

Ultimate Mode

Ultimate Mode is a non-canon gamemode made as an opportunity for more playable characters to appear in the game. The name of the mode is based on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, its tagline of "Everyone is Here" inspiring TheCyVap of including more playable characters. The Team Cyantix Discord server once hosted a community-held submission chat for fans to suggest their favorite characters to be added in the game.

The confirmed list of playable characters (before RockClones got cancelled) were Joker from Persona 5, Isabelle from Animal Crossing, Ashley from WarioWare, Paper Mario, an Inkling from Splatoon, and Mega Man.[1]

Other Modes

Along with a standard way of playing RockClones, there was a mode that stylizes the game after Persona 5 appropriate titled Persona Mode. The mode included a change in the HUD design, a different end-of-level screen and even an All-Out-Attack that can be activated against the boss. This was all programmed.

A gamemode where you would switch horizontal gravity with each jump was also planned. Indeed, it was based on the game VVVVV.

There was also a Dragon Quest-based gamemode, titled Clone Quest. It was a top-down RPG and only one area of the game mode was shown.

Balloon World is based on the Super Mario Odyssey gamemode of the same name. Players would hide ballons across the many different stages and share the balloon's ID to the world, letting others pop it too. This gamemode is present in playable builds via debug.

Mario Bros. is a recreation of the video game of the same name. While it's a gamemode, it's also Clone Mario and Clone Yoshi's Special Stage in the main game. Beating their Special Stage once would unlock Mario Bros. as a separate gamemode. The gamemode had Sonic as a playable character.

At the time where all these features were coded in, only two and a half stages were created. The game was cancelled after a long time in development as a result of lost motivation on the main content, as seen with side content taking up too much focus.

Error screen

  • The game was about 18% completed before being cancelled.[2]
  • If the life count exceeds 99, the following number would be a crown, the ultimate max number of lives being two crowns. This is a reference to the original Super Mario Bros. and is a common trend in other Mario games. This would not affect gameplay and simply functioned as the life cap, reaching "double crown" lives at 110.
  • Encore Mode's main villain twist would be foreshadowed in Maniac Mania via a pre-set challenge titled "Encore"
  • While not seen in the files, during development, there were more music tracks for the game that were either never implemented or were planned but never made:
    • [Special Stage music replacement] (Sonic Colors DS Special Stage) - Was never implemented in the game
    • [Special Stage music replacement] (Sonic Lost World 3DS Special Stage) - Was never implemented in the game
      • This one made it in the game in an unreleased build that only TheCyVap currently has.
    • Toy Yoshi's stage theme was planned to be replaced by a VRC6-style remix of Aqua Planet Zone from Sonic Chaos, but the remix was never made.
